En 1827,veintitrés años después de la muerte del gran filósofo alemán,apareció en Blackwoods Magazine el texto Los últimos días de Emmanuel Kant,de Thomas De Quincey, como parte de una serie titulada Galería de clásicos de la prosa alemana,y con el paso del tiempo este pequeño ensayo se ha convertido en una joya literaria con una peculiar fuerza de atracción,pues con razón se ha considerado a De Quincey el mejor prosista inglés del siglo XIX.Tres son los personajes principales con los que se topa el lector en este estudio biográfico:uno de ellos es,indudablemente,Kant,el otro es Wasianski,clérigo discípulo del filósofo,al que asistió y administró en los últimos años de su vida,y el tercero es el propio Thomas De Quincey,que aparece camuflado en las extensas notas al texto.Estos tres personajes van en busca de una identidad,la verdadera identidad de Kant,en pleno declive de una de las mentes más portentosas de la historia del pensamiento,pero el ensayo también persigue el retrato de la personalidad de Wasianski,autor de la obra Emmanuel Kant en sus últimos años de vida (Königsberg,1804) en la que se basa el presente ensayo,por el que De Quincey sintió verdadera fascinación.La edición se completa con una selección de anécdotas kantianas transmitidas por varios testigos de la vida del filósofo y el escrito Sobre el cráneo de Kant,obra del doctor Wilhelm Gottlieb Kelch.
